Blake Lively Says She’s not Like Her Gossip Girl Character

by admin on Apr.29, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

The CW’s Gossip Girl has put the spotlight on Blake Lively, who plays Serene van der Woodsen in the series, but the young actress is quick to point out the differences between her and the character that she plays.

“Serena was brought up very differently than I was brought up,” Lively said in an interview with the Associated Press. “Serena was given everything her whole life. … I grew up in a small little town in California — Burbank . I went to high school [and] what we would do on our nights off [was] go to a school fundraiser, go to a football game, where these people have masquerade balls or go lounge at The Palace Hotel and sip martinis.”

However, she did also recognize that she and Serena had some commonalities when it came to dealing with fame and popularity. In fact, she said that both of them try their best to be a “good person” despite the pressures of being in the spotlight.

“At the heart of it all, Serena really wants to be a good person — despite all odds, despite all the chaos that’s going on around her and all the other people in her life,” Blake Lively explained. “So I think that I strive to do the right thing and not fall into the norm [like] so many young people in Hollywood who — because they were raised differently — get caught up in some of the nonsense. And I really try to steer clear of that. So, you know, we’re like that in the same way.”

Add to that the fact that they “both giggle a lot” and look alike. Due to the recent success of the show, Lively felt an increase in the way people recognize her on the street, as now, people of all walks and ages seem to see her as the Serena from Gossip Girl.

“It’s pretty crazy. [I get recognized] not only [as] Serena van der Woodsen, but people know my own name,” Lively told the Associated Press. “[Everyone] from young girls, teenage girls, women in their 30s and 40s to, like, Guido-type guys, like frat boys. One day these, like, thuggish guys were, like, coming out, rolling out of their Escalade and they go — they’re like, ‘Man, that’s gossip girl!’ And they were, like, freaking out. It was so strange how many people would just get giddy over it. And it’s people that you would not expect at all.”

A Bridal Shower for a Desperate Housewives Star

by admin on Apr.24, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

As actress Eva Longoria prepares for her upcoming marriage to NBA star player Tony Parker, one can only hope that she doesn’t turn out to be like her character on the popular television series, Desperate Housewives. Since getting engaged, Longoria has expressed her extreme happiness about the present and the future.

Part of the pre-wedding tradition is the bridal shower, an intimate and social event that serves as the counterpart and (hopefully the foil) of what has come to be called “The Bachelor’s Party.” The bridal shower is usually thrown by the bride-to-be’s friends and family, which was, of course, the case with Longoria’s, only the difference is that her friends are also her co-stars in the Desperate Housewives series, making the day even more elaborate and spectacular.
The special event was held in the house of Felicity Huffman, who plays working mother Lynette Scavo on the show, and featured a delectable and healthy salad bar along with a desert selection made up of various chocolate concoctions. Not absent, of course, was the seemingly endless outpouring of presents, which mostly can be categorized as home décor.

Also present at the bridal at the outdoor affair were other Desperate Housewives celebrities, namely Teri Hatcher (whose character on the show, Susan Mayer, hosted a bridal shower for her neighbor Edie Brit, played by Nicolette Sheridan), Brenda Strong and Marcia Cross.

Before Longoria, who portrays the sultry housewife Gabrielle Solis, and Parker announced their engagement last year, rumors had circulated that the celebrity couple had broken up due to the pressures of their hectic careers. Nevertheless, they managed to break through all the difficulties and probably came to the realization they really couldn’t picture themselves with anyone else. The couple has planned to hold their wedding in the romantic city of Paris, and for those who intend to crash the special occasion, the date is easy to remember. Just think of three “7s” and you’re good to go.

Carrie Underwood’s ‘carnival Ride’ Released Today

by admin on Apr.09, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

Today is the day Carrie Underwood fans have been waiting for as the follow-up to her debut album had already been released and is now available for purchase. Entitled Carnival Ride, the highly-anticipated album follows her successful freshman collection, Some Hearts, which sold over 6 million copies. Her first single from Carnival Ride, So Small, had already climbed to the #5 spot in the U.S. country charts and #17 in the U.S. pop charts. Her new album is also expected to go up to the first place in the Billboard charts this week. Among her competitors are artists Bruce Springsteen, Kid Rock, Serj Tankian and Robert Plant.

In other news, Carrie Underwood recently talked to EW.com, and had made some controversial statements in their conversation. She commented on how much her American Idol success has contributed to her success after the competition. Apparently, the 24-year-old singer resents the public’s image of her and how the media portrays her as just another widely successful American Idol.

“Every single person in the music industry knows if they had a chance like [Idol], they’d take it. And I’m sorry — anybody who says I took a shortcut — they are insane,” Carrie Underwood said. “We didn’t take the easy way; if anything we took a more difficult way. It was just unconventional, therefore it must be wrong.”

However, some people think that she has gotten it all wrong. How could a no-one turn into a huge hit all over the world without going through a massive, highly-watched reality competition as American Idol? Let’s face it. If American Idol wasn’t the harder way to gain success, Underwood wouldn’t even try out for it. She would have made success on her own. But take a look at this, she’s at the top of the charts now and she’s ranting about being an American Idol? American Idol propelled her into the success she is experiencing now. How about some gratitude instead of biting of the hand that fed her?

The Sky Falls for American Idol Kevin “Chicken Little” Covais

by admin on Apr.03, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

Kevin Covais, the self proclaimed “nerdy kid”, has been voted off the hit show American Idol. Kevin rocketed to popularity when host Ryan Seacrest pointed out his strong resemblance to Disney’s latest animated character, Chicken Little. Seacrest was also fond of teasing the teen about his newly found sex symbol status.

From the first audition to his swan song, his pure and controlled voice never seemed to match the child’s body that went with it. Judge Simon Cowell repeatedly told the New York teenager that he didn’t have the look to be a star, but America felt differently and managed to keep him in the competition much longer than odds makers expected.

He stirred up a lot of controversy when an anti-Idol website, called Vote For The Worst, encouraged its visitors to vote for Kevin, keeping him in the competition as long as possible just for the fun of seeing him eat up the attention he was getting from fans and the female contestants. The website claims that it has the ability to taint the competition by influencing votes and getting people kicked off the show prematurely, but with Kevin’s departure their claims to power hold very little weight. Fox, the station that carries American Idol, has been very outspoken in its complaints about the website.

This week Kevin chose to sing the song, “When I Fall in Love” and while judges Randy and Paula fell in love with Kevin’s performance, Simon reserved his love only for Kevin. Saying that he liked the boy, he went on to point out that the song choices Kevin was making and his level of talent set him up to find his biggest fan base in the grandmother set. Perhaps Simon was right, and Kevin was voted off the show because his fans are of an age where they just don’t like to put down their knitting needles and power vote.

American Idol is not new to controversy. Remember Corey Clark’s claim of an affair with judge Paula Abdul and Frenchie Davis’ dismissal when topless pictures surfaced. Unforgettable moments were also provided by UC Berkeley’s William Hung’s rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs”. Hung has gone on to sign a record deal, record three albums, appear in numerous TV shows and commercials, and feature in both documentaries and movies. Not bad for someone who didn’t even make it through auditions.

American Idol is in its fifth season. Past winners include Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, and Carrie Underwood.

Desperate Housewives: Jesse Metcalfe’s Friends Stand by Him

by admin on Feb.16, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

In the chaos that defines the world of show businesses, it comes as no surprise that celebrities, old and young alike, turn to desperate measures in order to cope with the stress and pressures of being in the limelight.

Going into high-end rehabilitation centers seems to be a flourishing trend among the entertainment community today. Pop artist Britney Spears made headlines again in early 2007 when she shaved her head bald before checking into a treatment center based in Miami, Florida. Now, its former Desperate Housewives star, Jesse Metcalfe, who has found himself in a distressing situation, and in an attempt to battle his alcoholism, has entered a rehabilitation center located in Los Angeles.

Among those who were shocked to hear about the news was his former Desperate Housewives co-star, Eva Longoria. Longoria got to know Metcalfe very well, and the fact that he has a serious drinking problem is contradictory to the person she remembers from the set. Nevertheless, the star has pledged nothing but support for Metcalfe, and is happy that he has decided to act responsibly.

Metcalfe is also getting a lot of support from his girlfriend, Nadine Coyle, a member of the British female music group, Girls Aloud. Metcalfe and Coyle met in Australia in 2006, and has since then become a celebrity couple. They separated very briefly in November, and a few days before Metcalfe went to the rehabilitation center, rumors were flying that they had tied the knot. Coyle’s father, Niall, was also caught unaware of Metcalfe’s condition, and even thought that the young actor was not much of a drinker. In addition, Niall says that her daughter is extremely saddened about Metcalfe and is upset that she did not catch any telltale signs.

Although Metcalfe rose to fame with his portrayal of handsome teenager John Rowland in the popular television series, Desperate Housewives, he first appeared in the small screen with a starring role in the soap opera, Passions. His other acting credits include Smallville, John Tucker Must Die and 44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out.

Desperate Housewives Stars Attend Over Her Dead Body Premiere

by admin on Feb.09, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

Tuesday night was a big one for the stars of ABC as they got together at the Cinerama Dome/Arclight Theaters in Hollywood to celebrate the premiere of the romantic comedy Over Her Dead Body, in which Eva Longoria Parker stars. Other stars walking down the red carpet were Felicity Huffman, Nicollette Sheridan, Brenda Strong and Andrea Bowen, as well as Longoria-Parker’s film co-stars Jason Biggs, Lake Bell , Stephen Root and Lindsay Sloane. Other stars present were singer Michael Bolton, Sheridan ’s long-time fiancé and Parker’s best friend, Mario Lopez (Saved by the Bell , Dancing with the Stars). However, Eva Longoria Parker’s basketball star husband Tony Parker wasn’t able to attend the event, as he was in Seattle with the San Antonio Spurs.

Over Her Dead Body, which was written by Jeff Lowell, follows the story of Henry (Paul Rudd and his fiancée, Kate (Parker), who unexpectedly dies on their wedding day. Kate’s sister, Chloe (Lindsay Sloane) then convinces Henry to see a psychic named Ashley ( Lake Bell ). However, when Ashley and Henry begin to fall for each other, Kate visits Ashley in an attempt to ruin the budding relationship.

Eva Longoria Parker, who plays Gabrielle in Desperate Housewives, previously revealed in a press conference for the film that playing a ghost was what first drew her to the film.

“That was the reason why I picked the movie,” she explained. “I thought it would be fun to play a ghost. How many times do you really get a script, you love the part, and it’s a ghost? I thought ‘She can do anything, it would be fun to play her.’”

Moreover, the Desperate Housewives star admitted that her character on the film has a few things in common with her series persona.

“I think my biggest challenge was differentiating her from Gabrielle [in the TV show]. They can both be a little bitchy, but I felt like Kate was really validated in her anger, and in her displeasure,” she explained further. “She dies on her wedding day to the man she loves, and she doesn’t want to let him go. She doesn’t know when to let go, that is her journey through the movie.”

Over Her Dead Body will be released through theaters nationwide on February 1.

The Immortality of Marilyn Monroe

by admin on Feb.04, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

Marilyn Monroe was truly an icon of American pop culture. The actress, singer and model was known for her comedy skills and screen presence; however, her sex appeal became her signature. Monroe’s demeanor was notably controversial for its time. She eventually rose to be one of the most popular movie stars of the 1950s. Revered as a legendary Hollywood star, she is idolized throughout the world as a silver screen sex goddess. Today, celebrity women continue to imitate Monroe’s style, fashion and elegance, but few come close to the uniqueness of her stunning beauty and charming personality.

Madonna

Madonna has often said “to have been inspired” by Marilyn Monroe. Early in her career, she admitted in some interviews that she grew up idolizing the star. Madonna’s music video for “Material Girl” recreated Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”, a number from the 1950s movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. The pop icon copied Marilyn’s pink gown and mimicked the intricate choreography as homage to her idol’s distinctive look and unique flirtatious attitude. In 1992, Madonna did a parody of Marilyn’s birthday song to President Kennedy during a Saturday Night Live episode.

Christina Aguilera

In her recent “Ain’t no other man” video, Christina Aguilera imitates Marilyn Monroe. The video is set in the 1950s with credits written in a retro font. Aguilera steps out of a car, cleverly labeled Baby Jane (as a reference to Bette Davis), dressed in a sparkling white dress topped off with a vintage hat set over her curly, blonde hair. Her next outfit features fur and a lot of extravagant jewelry, a clear reference to glamorous women in the 1950s, most notably, Marilyn Monroe. Like the video for “Moulin Rouge”, Christina Aguilera continues to commemorate the daring women who paved the road for her own work.

Lindsay Lohan

In an interview, Lindsay Lohan stated her desire to entertain the troops in Iraq. The singer said she was inspired by the late Marilyn Monroe who entertained the troops during the Korean War. “I wanted to do what Marilyn Monroe did, when she went and just set up a stage and did a concert for the troops all by herself. It’s so amazing seeing that one woman just going somewhere.” Lohan’s controversial style of videos has kept media buzzing since her first album release. Along with other singers, she clearly admires the unique style and level of controversy that Monroe thrived on.

A birthday song like no other

Marilyn Monroe famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President Kennedy in 1962. The song and the video of the singer’s performance is a rare one that many generations have come to recognize. In fact, the song is often referenced in popular culture., It was presented at Prince Charles’s 50th birthday celebration in 1998. Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell parodied Monroe’s performance while changing the lyrics to “Happy Birthday Your Royal Highness”.

Marilyn Monroe set a trend that had never been seen before. She used her artistic talent and sex appeal to seduce the world. She initiated a craze that has revolutionized the music and acting industries. Modern entertainers of today continue to imitate Marilyn Monroe’s style because it worked then and it works now. Monroe once said that her great ambition was “to have people comment on my fine dramatic performances”. As she continues to be remembered and impersonated, her legend lives on. It is clear that her wish has come true.

Desperate Housewives Star Walking Down the Aisle With a Lavish Tiara

by admin on Feb.03, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

One of the perks of being a woman these days is that you get to undergo the traditional bridal shower before your big day. This is, of course, if you are among the ones living outside the Hollywood fame and fortune.

But pretend for one moment that you are a big entertainment celebrity like Eva Longoria, who plays sexy housewife Gabrielle Solis on the hit television series, Desperate Housewives, how many bridal showers do you think you would like to have? If you’re tempted to say two, then that’s just about the right number.

Apparently, Longoria received not one, but two bridal showers, courtesy of her Desperate Housewives co-stars Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher. As if it wasn’t enough that she’s marrying NBA star Tony Parker this coming July, she also got to attend two separate lavish events in her honor (and of course, two separate set of gifts). Talk about lucky.

Funnily enough, Longoria’s character from the show is also getting hitched. No, Gabrielle is not renewing her vows to Carlos. She is set to wed Victor, her latest love interest, during the show’s season finale. However, unlike Longoria, Gabrielle will not be getting double bridal showers. Instead, she will get to do her wedding march with a lovely little tiara on her head.

Now, before you say you would rather have two bridal showers (and again, two sets of gifts), here is a brief description of the lavish accessory. Diamond-studded and valued at over 1 million dollars, the Doris Panos creation can be worn in two ways: as a sparkling tiara or as a stunning choker. If that wasn’t enough to impress you, the Desperate Housewives costume design team passed up four other big-time jewelry designers because they believed that the tiara was the best and most appropriate for the characters (both Gabrielle and Victor come from affluent families).

Christina – a Name Used in Royal Circles, But Also Have Some Interesting Background and Use

by admin on Feb.02, 2010, under Art And Entertainment

Christina

Christina is a female name originating from Christian.

Saint Christina (3rd or 5th century AD), a saint and martyr pre-dating the Catholic and Orthodox congregational tradition

According to Catholic and Orthodox tradition, Saint Christina was a saint and martyr allegedly born in Persia during the 3rd century or 5th century. Her feast day is July 24. Very little is known about her life.

Historical information about Christian is scarce, but several folk legends and hagiographies have arisen about her. These accounts vary widely, but seem to agree on some details: Christina was the daughter of a wealthy pagan magistrate named Urban/Urbain who had his daughter tortured because of her faith, but not before God thwarted his efforts on several occasions. The nature of the torture varies with each telling, and can include iron hooks, grilling by fire, placement in a furnace, torture on the wheel, assault by snakes, assailment by arrows, drowning at sea, and other assorted methods. In all versions of the tale Christina eventually perishes, but not before God exhibits his wrath by lashing out at her tormentors. Christina’s relics are said to be kept in Palermo, of which Christina is one of four patron saints.

Because evidence of Christina’s life and martyrdom is scant, some scholars have concluded that her legend is the result of pious fiction being mistaken for history. The theme of her legend (a beautiful Christian maiden is tortured to death by pagan men, who in return suffer the wrath of God) is repeated in many pre-congregation hagiographies, particularly that of Saint Barbara.

Christina the Astonishing (1150 – 1224), also known as Christina Mirabilis, was a Christian holy-woman born in Brustem (near Sint-Truiden, Belgium) in 1150. She is sometimes considered a saint. Christina is as much remembered for her faith as for her numerous and violent fits of ecstasy. Her memorial day is July 24 (August 6 by the Old calendar).

Born a peasant, Christina was orphaned at 15. When she was 21 (22 according to some sources), she is said to have suffered a massive seizure. According to legend, her condition was so severe that witnesses assumed she had died. A funeral was held, but during the service, she awoke, and is said to have levitated before the crowd. A priest eventually ordered Christina to descend, and she did so, only to land on the altar and proclaim that she had witnessed heaven, hell, and purgatory. Purgatory would henceforth become a major theme in her life.

After the levitation incident, Christina continued to be tormented by strange behavior and unusual events. As chronicled by her contemporaries, she suffered massive seizures (leading some modern scholars to postulate she was stricken with epilepsy). She also began to claim she could “smell sin” on other parishioners. She is said to have climbed trees, hidden in ovens and scaled roofs (when she did not levitate outright) in dramatic attempts to escape the sensation.

Christina displayed other odd behavior as well. She is said to have handled fire with impunity, and to have strapped herself to a mill wheel to be dragged, apparently without injury, round and round through the water. She is also said to have swum unmotivated through freezing waters. When tied to a pillory to prevent her from causing self harm (or according to other sources, because witnesses assumed she was “full of devils”), she is said to have always escaped unharmed. Christina died in 1224 of natural causes, aged 74.

Famous persons using the name are as follows:

Christina (Swedish: Kristina) (8 December[1] 1626 – 19 April 1689), later known as Maria Christina Alexandra and sometimes Countess Dohna, was Queen regnant of Sweden from 1632 to 1654. After having converted to Catholicism and abdicated her throne, she spent her latter years in France and Rome, where she was buried in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Christina Pickles (born on February 17, 1935 in Yorkshire, United Kingdom) is a British-born American actress. She has appeared in such television shows as Roseanne, Matlock, Diagnosis Murder and Murder, She Wrote, as well as the soap operas The Guiding Light and Another World.

There are also places named Christina, we will only mention some few here and leave it to the reader to find more places and comment on that if you like.

Fort Christina (later renamed Fort Altena) was the first Swedish settlement in North America and the principal settlement of the New Sweden colony. Built in 1638 and named after Queen Christina of Sweden, it was located approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) east of the present downtown Wilmington, Delaware, at the confluence of the Brandywine Creek and the Christina River, approximately 2 mi (3 km) upstream from the mouth of the Christina on the Delaware River. It was the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley.

Christina Lake is located along the Crowsnest Highway in the south-central area of British Columbia known as Boundary Country, which separates the Okanagan region from the West Kootenays. It is located 23 kilometers east of Grand Forks, just 1 km north of the United States border. The lake is renowned as the “warmest tree-lined lake in Canada” and was voted “BC’s favourite lake”. The region experiences very hot, dry summers and the lake itself lies above a geothermal fault, these two factors result in summer water temperatures averaging in the 23°C range.

The Christina River is a tributary of the Delaware River, approximately 35 miles (56 km) long, in northern Delaware in the United States, also flowing through small areas of southeastern Pennsylvania and northeastern Maryland. Near its mouth the river flows past downtown Wilmington, Delaware, forming the city’s harbor for traffic on the Delaware River. The Port of Wilmington, opened in 1923 at the river’s mouth, handles international cargo and trade.

Ships called Christina, such as Christina O which is one of the world’s longest private yachts at 325 feet 3 inches (99 metres). She was originally a Canadian River class frigate called HMCS Stormont and was launched in 1943. She served as a convoy escort during the Battle of the Atlantic and was present at the D-Day landings. After the end of the Second World War she was one of many surplus naval vessels and Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis purchased her for just $34,000. He spent $4 million to convert her into a luxurious yacht and renamed her Christina after his daughter. Apart from Onassis’s mistress Maria Callas and his wife Jackie Onassis other celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Eva Peron have sailed on her. She was one of the most famous society venues of the mid 20th century: John F Kennedy first met Winston Churchill on board in 1957.
